Christmas greetings!

All the Christmas letters from friends and family are a highlight at this time of year. We so enjoy hearing from you and look forward to connecting in this way.

This past year for us has been the most difficult and the most wonderful year in our lives. Hands down. Many of you are familiar with the story.

January
We began the year with a healthy IVF pregnancy, expecting identical twin girls! We also snuck in a last trip to Germany to see Esther’s family before the babies’ arrival.

February
After returning from Germany we started having complications with the pregnancy and our girls were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome – a blood vessel disorder in the placenta, resulting in a 90% mortality rate if left untreated. We took a last-minute flight to Houston, Texas for an in utero laser surgery.

March and April
The surgery was successful in treating the TTTS, but the uterus did not like being disturbed and a blood imbalance eventually recurred. Esther spent two months on bed rest in the hospital and Bjorn commuted back and forth between our home town and Minneapolis, spending the nights on the hospital sleeper chair in Esther’s room. From 23 weeks gestation on, we prayed to make it one more day.

May and June
At 30 weeks gestation, on May 4th, Esther’s water broke and Liana Sophia and Amaya Noel were delivered safely via c-section, weighing 2 lbs 6 oz and 2 lbs 12 oz. Due to the earlier in utero complications, the attending neonatologist told us later that he had not expected Liana to survive beyond delivery. The girls spent the next 3 weeks in the NICU at Children’s Hospital Minneapolis and then another 4 weeks in the Special Care Nursery at Abbott Northwestern.

July to the present
We celebrate each day of life we have with our girls. We dread each night of sleep deprivation! These two little wonders have brought us more heartache, more anxiety, more work, and more joy than we could have ever imagined. We are also deeply indebted to the many doctors, nurses, family, friends, and strangers who have cared for us with such compassion and excellence.

Everything else in our life is just a side note compared to the story above. We are enjoying life and work here in Minnesota. Esther escapes to the YMCA twice a week to teach a spinning class (indoor cycling). Bjorn is into his second year of ministry at a local Lutheran Church. Esther’s parents visited us from Germany twice since the girls have been home. Bjorn’s parents live close by and are the most gracious babysitters ever!

This Christmas we are celebrating three births. Amaya. Liana. And most importantly, our Savior Jesus. We praise Him for our two precious gifts and for our life in Him.

I've been working on a video of the girls' NICU time for a while, and it seems pretty fitting to post it on their 6 months birthday. The last 12 months have been quite the journey, starting with an emotionally and physically draining IVF treatment, the nightmarish pregnancy due to the girls' TTTS, their premature delivery and time in the NICU and then those tough first few months at home. To look back at it all and see how far we've come is simply amazing. Happy 6 months birthday, Liana and Amaya.

Es ist kaum zu glauben, dass Amaya und Liana schon 6 Monate alt sind. Ich habe ein kleines Video ueber ihre Zeit auf der Fruechenstation gemacht und dachte, dies sei ein angemessener Anlass, um es auf den Blog zu stellen! Die letzten 12 Monate waren eine aufregend-anstrengende Zeit, und zu sehen, wie weit wir schon gekommen ist, ist einfach unglaublich!

Yesterday, the babies turned 2 months old. Of course, they don't look or act like typical two-month olds ... which is no surprise considering the fact that they're still not even supposed to be born yet! (My due date was July 13). They are doing very well, though. After 7 weeks in the NICU/Special Care Nursery, they came home at the end of June ... and have been keeping us plenty busy since :) Here are a few pictures.

Gestern wurden die Zwillinge 2 Monate alt! Sie verhalten sich natuerlich nicht wie typische 2-Monate alte Babies, und sehen auch noch nicht so aus ... immerhin waeren sie eigentlich immer noch nicht geboren! (Ihr Geburtstermin war der 13. Juli). Aber sie wachsen und nehmen zu und es geht ihnen gut. Nach 7 Wochen auf der Fruechenstation kamen sie Ende Juni nach Hause ... und haben uns seither maechtig auf Trab gehalten :) Hier ein paar Fotos.

Our apologies for not updating this blog for such a long time, but the last few months were about as crazy as they get. After our laser surgery in Texas to reverese our babies Twin-to-Twin-Transfusion Syndrome, Esther ended up on bedrest for preterm labor. Mid-March, the babies started taking another turn for the worse, and Esther was admitted to Abbott Hospital, where she spent the next 8 weeks on strict hospital bedrest under constant monitoring for the babies' well-being. We were told that our daughters could be born any day, and were so thankful that they didn't make their arrival until May 4th, 2009.

Liana Sophia was born at 11:13am, weighing 2lbs 6oz. Her sister Amaya Noel was born a minute later, weighing 2lbs 12 oz.

They are both doing great, especially considering all the complications they endured during the pregnancy and their resulting prematurity. They are now at Minneapolis Children's NICU, where they are slowly growing and gaining weight. Here are some pictures:

Es tut uns echt leid, dass wir diesen Blog schon seit Ewigkeiten nicht mehr auf den aktuellen Stand gebracht haben ... aber die letzten Monate hatten es in sich. Nach Esther's Laser-OP in Texas Mitte Februar, die das Zwillingstransfusions-Syndrom der Babies aufheben sollte, traten eine Woche spaeter die ersten Wehen auf, so dass Esther Bettruhe verordnet wurde. Am 16. Maerz wurde bei einer Untersuchung festgestellt, dass es den Babies wieder nicht gut ging. Die folgenden 8 Wochen hat Esther unter strenger Bettruhe im Krankenhaus verbracht, wo die Babies staendig dur Ultraschall, Herzfrequenz-monitor, usw. beobachtet wurden. Uns wurde gesagt, dass man sie eventuell jeden Tag holen muesste. Wir sind deshalb sehr dankbar, dass sie es noch bis zum 4. Mai 2009 ausgehalten haben, bevor sie per Kaiserschnitt geboren wurden.

Liana Sophia erblickte um 11.13 Uhr das Licht der Welt und wog 1070 gr. Ihre Schwester Amaya Noel wurde eine Minute spaeter geboren und wog 1260gr.

Es geht ihnen erstaunlich gut, aber dennoch werden sie die naechsten 6-8 Wochen auf der Fruechen-Intensivstaion verbringen.

Houston, we have a problem.

No sooner had we returned from Germany and at a routine ultrasound we received the terrible news that our identical twin girls were suffering from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). Basically, one of the girls has been receiving too much blood and the other too little, all via the blood vessels in their shared placenta. If left untreated, the mortality rate is about 90%. It is treatable, though not curable, so we hopped on a plane and flew down to Houston, Texas for laser surgery on the placenta. We spent about 5 days down there and returned home this past Tuesday evening. The surgery appears to have been successful, but there are no guarantees and it only increases their chance of survival. So we wait and we pray. Esther's at about 20 weeks and we need to make it another 10 weeks to give these girls a good chance of making it as preemies. We do appreciate your prayers for our two little ones, and so you can pray for them by name, it's time to let you know what they are!

Liana is Hebrew and means, "My God has answered." Sophia is Greek for wisdom. Amaya is Japanese and means "night rain". And Noel is associated with Christmas and the miracle of Jesus' birth.

Trip to Germany - Deutschlandreise

We were so excited when we got the okay to go on one last trip to Germany - despite Esther's twin pregnancy being considered a high risk one. It was going to be our last trip ever, after all, traveling without children in tow. Also, we hadn't had the chance to meet my sister's baby boy born in October ... so the trip was more than overdue. And we had a fabulous time! Due to Esther's ever present morning and motion sickness, we didn't do a lot of traveling while there ... but stuck close to my family's house to spend time with Esther's parents, siblings, and her grandma. Bjorn helped out on the construction of Rebecca and Thomas' house for a day - it's amazing how quickly it's coming together. With all the fun we had, the 10 days were over way too quickly - but we're so thankful we got to make this trip.

Wir waren super froh, als wir von unserem Arzt das grüne Licht für den Flug nach Deutschland erhalten haben ... obwohl sie Esther's Zwillingsschwangerschaft eigentlich als Risikoschwangerschaft eingestufen. Immerhin war dies unsere letzte Reise, bei der wir noch noch keine Kinder im Schlepptau hatten! Ausserdem hatten wir unseren Neffen Jeremias, den Sohn von Esther's Schwester Rebecca und ihrem Mann Thomas, noch nicht persönlich kennengelernt, obwohl er schon Anfang Okotber geboren war. Es war also höchste Zeit für eine Deutschlandreise!
Aufgrund Esther's ständiger Übelkeit sind wir nicht so viel unterwegs gewesen, sondern haben in erster Linie Zeit mit Esther's Eltern, Geschwistern, und ihrer Oma verbracht. Bjorn half auch mal einen Tag auf der Baustelle von Thomas und Rebecca's Haus ... es sieht schon fast bewohnbar aus :)! Bei dem ganzen Spass, den wir hatten, vergingen die 10 Tage dort natürlich viel zu schnell ... aber wir sind echt total dankbar, dass wir diese Reise machen konnten.

Winter Hobby

If you're going to survive a Minnesota winter, it helps to have outdoor hobbies that send you out to play in the ice and snow. One of Bjorn's favorite winter hobbies is playing hockey. Elk River is a hockey town and the old Handke Stadium (a.k.a. the Pit) off of Main Street is the place for pick-up pond hockey here in town. Here's Bjorn, just coming home from an evening on the ice.

Wenn man den Minnesota-Winter überleben will, hilft es einige Hobbys zu haben, bei denen man sich im Schnee und Eis austoben kann. Eins von Bjorns Lieblings-Winterhobbys ist Eishockey spielen. Dieser Sport ist in Elk River (und ganz Minnesota) sehr beliebt und es gibt im Zentrum der Stadt einen Eisrink, bei dem man zu jeder Zeit andere Spieler für ein Hockey-Spiel finden kann. Hier ist ein Foto von Bjorn, als er gerade von einem solchen Abend heim kommt.

What a fabulous Christmas we had this year! It was the first one in years when we actually lived close to family again and got to enjoy TONS of family get-togethers. Up until Christmas day, Bjorn was very busy at church, so we did most of our celebrating afterwards. A special highlight was introducing Bjorn's family to Raclette, a meal my family typically shares for Christmas.
On Saturday, we spent the day at Bjorn's parents house along with 24 other people - his extended family on his mom's side ... and that was tons of fun. Check out this video below, where we got the to sing "O Christmas Tree" in German as a special greeting to my family in Germany :) Pictures will follow soon.

Wir hatten ein tolles Weihnachtsfest dieses Jahr! Es war das erste Jahr, in dem wir in der Nähe von Bjorn's Familie wohnen, und so an jeder Menge Weihnachtsfeierlichkeiten teilnehmen konnten. Bis zum 1. Weihnachtsfeiertag hatte Bjorn sehr viel in der Gemeinde zu tun, so dass wir die meisten Familienfeiern danach geplant hatten. Ein besonderer Höhepunkt war es, Bjorn's Familie das Raclette-essen vorzustellen. Das gibt es in Amerika noch wenig, ist aber ein Traditionsessen in meiner Familie zu Weihnachten. Den Samstag verbrachten wir dann mit 24 anderen Leuten bei Bjorn's Eltern, wo wir mit seiner Verwandtschaft Weihnachten gefeiert haben. Im Video unten seht ihr, wie wir sie dazu gebracht haben, "Oh Tannenbaum" auf deutsch zu singen, als kleiner Gruss an meine Familie :) Bilder folgen in den nächsten Tagen.

Surviving the Minnesota Winter - den Minnesota-Winter überleben :)

Today, we woke up to a wind chill temp of - 40 F. The actual high for the day is -6F, which will still feel like -29 F, thanks for the wind chill. It is safe to say that it is literally too cold to go outside, unless you absolutely have to. A snow and ice storm hit us yesterday, and although everything looks wondefully white outside, the road conditions are nothing but treacherous. Bjorn had to skip driving down to the cities for a class, and is only going the 1.5 miles drive to church. I'm not planning on leaving the house all day.

Heute morgen wachten wir zu einer gefühlten Temperatur von -40 Celsius auf. Die eigentliche Tageshöchstemperatur wird bei -23 C liegen, doch dank des kalten Windes wird sich auch das wie -34 C anfühlen. Es ist wirklich zu kalt, um das Haus zu verlassen, wenn man es nicht unbedingt muss. Gestern abend und nacht hatten wir einen grossen Schnee- und Eissturm, und obwohl die Landschaft wunderschön aussieht, sind die Strassenverhältnisse furchtbar. Bjorn konnte nicht zu seiner Vorlesung nach Minneapolis fahren, sondern fuhr statt dessen nur die 2km bis in die Gemeinde. Ich habe nicht vor, das Haus heute zu verlassen.

Our big announcement! Unsere grossen Neuigkeiten!

We're expecting twins!! Crazy news, uh? Just imagine how we must feel :) As far as the doctors can tell, the twins are identical, which is very rare. The babies are doing great, we just saw them again at our 2nd ultrasound yesterday. We could clearly see their arms, legs, head, spine and heart beating - all that at only about 1.55cm size!
Esther has been terribly nauseous and sick for the last few weeks, and we're learning that double babies also mean double the mean pregnancy symptoms! Of course, an identical twin pregnancy puts us at a much higher risk for all sorts of complications, so we will certainly appreciate your prayers over the next 6.5 months or so. We're expecting to have those two little ones some time in June - right one time for our 5th anniversary.

Wir erwarten Zwillinge!! Echter Wahnsinn, oder? Soweit die Ärzte das im Moment feststellen können, sieht es so aus, als wären die Zwillinge eineiig - was wirklich selten vorkommt.
Den Babies geht es klasse, wir haben sie erst gestern bei unserer 2. Ultraschall Untersuchung gesehen. Wir konnten ihre Köpfe, Arme, Beine, Wirbelsäule und ihr Herz schlagen sehen - und das, obwohl sie gerade mal 1,55cm gross sind!
Esther ist es seid Wochen den ganzen Tag über furchtbar übel, da doppelte Babies auch eine doppelte Portion von den miesen Schwangerschaftssymptomen bedeuten! Natürlich bringt eine Zwillingschwangerschaft auch das Risiko von allen möglichen Komplikationen mit sich - deshalb sind wir euch für eure Gebete in den nächsten 6,5 Monaten sehr dankbar! Wir erwarten unseren Nachwuchs irgendwann im Juni - also pünktlich zu unserem 5. Hochzeitstag!

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we begin our Thanksgiving Day 2008, we have so much in our two little lives for which to be thankful: God's gift of life and salvation in Christ and His presence in our daily lives, a marriage that rocks and a best friend to go through life with, families that love us, and wonderful friends. Today we're celebrating Thanksgiving out at Blue Lake, i.e., at my (Bjorn's) parents' place (about 25 minutes outside of Elk River). We'll post some pics of the event, but for now, those above are from a couple days ago.

Heute ist das Thanksgivings-Fest hier in den USA, und es erinnert uns daran, dass wir so viele Dinge haben, für die wir dankbar sind: Gottes Geschenk des Lebens und der Erlösung in Jesus Christus, seine Gegenwart in unserem täglichen Leben. Eine tolle Ehe und einen besten Freund an der Seite, mit dem wir durchs Leben gehen, Familien, die uns lieben, und wunderbare Freunde. Heute feiern wir Thanksgiving in Blue Lake, bei Bjorn's Eltern (ca. 25 Minuten von hier). Wir werden nachher Fotos von heute hinzufügen, die Fotos oben haben wir vor ein paar Tagen gemacht, als Bjorn's Schwester Ingrid und ihr Mann Tony zu Besuch waren.

Deer Hunting and Wii Bowling

Being back in Minnesota, I (Bjorn) have enjoyed getting back to the good ol' Minnesota past times of hunting and fishing. On opening weekend of deer season (for firearms), we started with a little walleye fishing. Then the next morning kicked off our deer hunting efforts. The weather didn't cooperate and the deer really hunkered down in the cold 35 mph winds, so I didn't even get a shot off that weekend. But the season's still open and I'm hoping I'll get one sooner or later.

Yesterday we enjoyed a great dinner date here in Elk River at our friends' house, Jason and Brittany. The four of us played a little Wii and Esther won 1st place in the bowling showdown! Way to go, honey!

Seit wir wieder in Minnesota leben, genieße ich (Bjorn) wieder die hier üblichen Hobbys - Jagen und Angeln. Am ersten Wochenende der Hirschjagt haben wir Freitagabend erstmal geangelt. Dann am nächsten Morgen ging die Jagt los. Das Wetter wollte nicht mitmachen und wegen der kalten 60 kmh Winde blieben die Hirsche tief im Wald. Ich habe an dem Wochenende nicht einmal einen Schuss abgefeuert. Aber die Jagtsaison ist noch nicht zu Ende und ich hoffe, dass ich noch ein bisschen Glück haben werde.

Gestern abend waren wir zum Abendessen bei unseren Freunden, Jason und Brittany, eingeladen. Wir vier haben auch ein bisschen Nintendo Wii gespielt und Esther hat beim Kegeln den 1. Platz gewonnen! Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Schatz!

First Snow (in October!) - Erster Schnee (im Oktober!)

Yup, that's right. It snowed already. Sunday, October 26th was the first snow of the year. Big flakes were coming down for a good part of the day. Nothing's accumulated on the ground yet, but it's only a matter of time now. Last night it was 23˚F degrees. It's going to be a long winter... especially for Esther, who got her first Minnesota-proof winter jacket today. :) FYI: the average January temperature for our city (Elk River) is 11˚F!

Ja, es ist tatsächlich wahr. Es hat schon geschneit. Der erste Schnee des Jahres kam am Sonntag, dem 26. Oktober. Einige Stunden lang hat es große, weisse Flocken geschneit. Bisher ist noch nichts liegen geblieben, aber es dauert bestimmt nicht mehr lange. Heute Nacht hatten wir -5˚C. Es wird ein langer Winter... vor allem für Esther, die heute ihre erste Minnesota-taugliche Winterjacke kaufen musste. :) Nur zur Info: die Durchschnittstemperatur im Januar hier in Elk River ist -12˚C!

Fall Colors - Herbstfarben

Last week Esther and I drove an hour north of Elk River to Mille Lacs Kathio State Park. The fall colors have been beautiful and we wanted to spend a day enjoying them. We did some hiking, climbed the 100 ft. fire tower, and then went into the little town of Onamia for supper and fresh apple pie. As you can see from the pictures, I was enjoying taking pictures (a lot!) of my beautiful wife. :)

Letzte Woche fuhren Esther und ich eine Stunde nördlich von Elk River in das Mille Lacs Kathio Naturschutzgebiet. Die Herbstfarben sind total schön und wir wollten sie einen Tag lang richtig geniessen. Wir sind gewandert, sind einen 30,5m-hohen Feuerturm hoch geklettert, und sind schliesslich zum Abendessen mit anschliessendem Apfelpie in das Städtchen Onamia gefahren. Wie ihr sehen könnt, habe ich es genossen, (viele!) Fotos von meiner schönen Ehefrau zu machen. :)

Bjorn's 27th Birthday - Bjorns 27. Geburtstag

This is Bjorn writing for once. I had my 27th birthday this past week, on Sept. 30. The last birthday I actually celebrated with my family was my 18th, nine years ago! So it was a real blessing to be with my parents and grandparents again (and of course, with my wife too!). Before work in the morning, Esther made a great breakfast for the two of us. After the work day, my folks, grandparents, and Esther and I went for supper to a restaurant called Maynard's (in Rogers). Then we all came back to Elk River to my grandparents' place for gift opening and cake. Thank you for all the wonderful gifts and birthday greetings from many of you!

Hier schreibt Bjorn. Diese Woche am 30. September hatte ich meinen 27. Geburtstag. Der letzte Geburtstag, den ich zuhause mit meiner Familie gefeiert habe, war der 18. - vor neun Jahren! Daher war es echt schön wieder mal mit meinen Eltern und Großeltern meinen Geburtstag zu feiern (und natürlich mit meiner Ehefrau!). Vor der Arbeit hat Esther für mich ein großes Frühstück gemacht. Dann abends gingen wir mit meinen Eltern und Großeltern essen. Danach haben wir bei meinen Großeltern Geschenke ausgepackt und Geburtstags-Kuchen gegessen. Danke an alle die mir Geschenke gemacht haben (v.a. meine Schwiegereltern in DE) und an alle die angerufen oder Karten geschickt haben.

Surprise Visit to Germany - Überraschungsbesuch in Deutschland

Esther's grandma celebrated her 80th birthday in Germany last week, and Esther was the surprise guest. Oma thought we wouldn't be able to come due to Bjorn's new job, but Esther simply made the trip by herself and surprised her :) She was in Germany for about 10 days and had a fabulous time, as you can see from the pictures.

Esther's Oma hat letzte Woche in Deutschland ihren 80. Geburtstag gefeiert, und Esther war der Überraschungsgast! Oma dachte, dass wir aufgrund von Bjorn's neuem Job nicht kommen könnten, aber Esther hat sich einfach alleine auf den Weg gemacht. Sie war 10 Tage dort, und wie ihr von den Fotos sehen könnt, war es eine sehr schöne Zeit.

Minnesota State Fair - Minnesota Volksfest

On Labor Day, Bjorn and I visited the Minnesota State Fair. It was awesome. It was the last really hot day of summer, there were tons of people and things to see. I do think, however, that people mostly come for the food. Bjorn enjoyed the "All U can Drink" Milk Stand whereas I was fascinated by all the "German" food that was being advertised - like the Pretzel House above. Never mind the fact that it's mispelled, has the wrong article, and tastes nothing like a German pretzel. It's the thought that counts (and in this case, sells, I'm sure).

Am letzten Montag war hier Feiertag, und wir machten einen Ausflug zum Minnesota Stair Fair, dem grossen Volksfest. Es war der letzte super-warme Tag des Sommers, und es war total viel los. Obwohl es die verschiedensten Attraktionen zu bewundern gibt, kommen die meisten Leute doch wegen dem Essen, dem sogenannten "Fair Food". Bjorn z.B. trank an dem "All You Can Drink" Milchstand literweise Milch, während ich eher von den "deutschen" Spezialitäten fasziniert war - zum Beispiel dem "Pretzel-House" oben. Da macht es auch nichts, dass "Brezel" falsch geschrieben ist, "Haus" den falschen Artikel hat, und das ganze dann auch nicht wirklich wie eine Laugenbrezel schmeckt. Es ist das deutsche, das es zu etwas besonderem macht :)!

We've had a busy last week! On Saturday night, we went to a pre-season game of the Vikings, which was totally awesome. The next day, we left for a church conference in Texas. This was the 2nd time this summer that we drove over 2,000 miles in less than a week - but it was a fabulous trip with a group of really nice people from our new church.

In der letzten Woche war jede Menge los. Am Samstag Abend waren Bjorn und ich bei einem Football-Spiel der Minnesota Vikings, was total klasse war. Am nächsten Tag machten wir uns dann auf den Weg zu der Gemeindekonferenz in Texas. Das war nun schon das zweite Mal diesen Sommer, dass wir über 3.200 km in einer Woche gefahren sind - aber es war eine tolle Reise mit einer sehr netten Gruppe von Leuten aus unserer neuen Gemeinde.

Fishing Adeventure - Angel-Abenteuer

Last week Bjorn had his first fishing adventure since our return to the Midwest. He floated the Mississippi river with his dad and brother-in-law in a canoe while fishing for river fish. Some of the highlights of the trip included getting caught in a HUGE thunderstorm on the river and catching the above smallmouth bass.

Bjorn erlebete letzte Woche sein erstes Angel-Abenteuer seitdem wir wieder in Minnesota sind. Er ist zusammen mit seinem Vater und Schwager in einem Kanu den Mississippi entlang gefahren, während sie geangelt haben. Die Höhepunkte dieses Ausflugs waren u.a. das riessen Gewitter, von dem sie mittem auf dem Fluss überrascht wurden, und natürlich der grosse Barsch, den Bjorn gefangen hat.

Bjorn's New Job - Bjorn's neue Arbeit

August 1st marked a very special day for Bjorn. It was his first day of work. After 8 years of school, he's finally able to apply all he's learned in his new job as a pastor. He's working for a larger Lutheran church here in Elk River. Last weekend, he gave a greeting at all 4 services and today he preached his first sermon in one of the services. He's working with a wonderful staff of other pastors and support staff and the people in the church have welcomed us very warmly.

Der 1. August war ein ganz besonderer Tag für Bjorn: sein erster Arbeitstag als Pastor. Nach 8 Jahren Studium kann er nun endlich alles Gelernte in die Tat umsetzen :)! Er arbeitet hier in Elk River für eine grössere lutheranische Gemeinde. Letztes Wochenende gab er ein Grusswort in allen 4 Gottesdiensten und heute hat er zum ersten Mal in einem der Gottesdienste gepredigt. Er arbeitet mit einem tollen Team von Pastoren und anderen Mitarbeitern zusammen und auch der Rest der Gemeinde hat uns sehr warmherzig empfangen.

275 miles on the bike - 450 km auf dem Fahrrad

Wow ... we made it! I cannot believe we actually biked 275 miles this week. It was totally awesome ... and quite grueling at times, too :)

Monday and Tuesday we biked about 62 miles each. Both days were challenging (we had plenty of hills to climb and head winds to deal with), but riding through the scenic Iron Range was so much fun. Wednesday was a relatively easy day as we "only" rode about 55 miles - again through beautiful scenery. Thursday was by far the toughest day, as we rode 68 miles, a lot of it uphill on tough roads, fighting strong winds and during the last hour pouring rain.
Friday was only 26 miles ... a cake after the 70 miles we'd done the previous day. We rode into Duluth with a big pack of cyclists and it was so much fun. Once again, it started raining, just as we were climbing the bear of a 2 mile hill up to the University of Duluth, we're the big celebration was being hosted. It was the greatest feeling to cross that finish line - I was so proud of what we had accomplished - riding for 275 miles and raising all that money and awareness for the work of the National MS Society.

Bjorn's mom had come up mid-week (and traded spots with Bjorn's grandpa, who had been shuttling our car and luggage for the first half of the week) and we spent a great day and a half in the Duluth/Two Harbor area after we were done riding. I treated myself to a 30 minute massage in Duluth (my neck was killing me!), we did some shopping and just hung out at the hotel. It was awesome! Check out the full slide show below.

Bike MS Tram

Wow ... wir haben es geschafft! Ich kann es kaum glauben, dass wir in der letzten Woche tatsächlich 450 km auf dem Fahrrad gefahren sind! Es war eine wahnsinnig tolle Erfahrung ... wenn auch zeitweise sehr anstrengend und schmerzhaft :)

Am Montag und Dienstag sind wir jeweils ca. 100 km geradelt. Beide Tage waren anstrengend, aber wir sind durch eine wunderschöne Gegend von Minnesota gefahren und es war echt total schön. Der Mittwoch war der leichteste Tag, da sind wir "nur" 89 km gefahren. Am Donnerstag hingegen, waren es über 130km - viel bergauf, z.T. mit total starkem Gegenwind. In der letzten Stunde hat es dann auch noch angefangen, total übel zu regnen!

Am Freitag fuhren wir dann die letzten 44km nach Duluth, wo wir auf dem Unigelände total warmherzig empfangen wurden. Die National MS Society veranstaltete eine riesen Party für die 1000 Fahrradfahrer, die durch diese Fahrradtour Geld gesammelt für die MS Forschung und Behandlung.
Sonja, Bjorn's Mutter, ist die 2. Wochenhälfte zu uns gestossen (und hat damit den Platz von Bjorn's Opa eingenommen, der Anfang der Woche unser Gepäck und Auto immer von einem Standort zum anderen gebracht hat). Nachdem wir am Freitag mittag mit der Fahrradtour fertig waren, haben wir noch 2 sehr schöne Tage mit Bjorn's Eltern in Duluth und Umgebung an den Grossen Seen verbracht. The Ultimate Minnesota Road Trip! Unsere Fahrradtour durch Minnesota!

Tomorrow, we're driving up to Grand Rapids, Minnesota, from where we'll begin the first lag of our 275-mile bike trip early Monday morning.
We're doing various loops and detours, and so it was difficult to include a direct map of our route for you. But here is our riding schedule for each day:

Morgen fahren wir nach Grand Rapids (3 Stunden nördlich von hier), von wo wir am frühen Montagmorgen dann die erste Strecke unserer 450km-langen Fahrradtour beginnen.
Wir werden u.a. einige Rundwege fahren, so dass es etwas schwierig war, eine Karte unserer genauen Fahrtstrecke beizufügen. Aber hier ist der Plan für die 5 Tage:

Monday: Grand Rapids to Chisholm, 55 miles (88km)
Tuesday: Chisholm loop, 62 miles (100km)
Wednesday: Chisholm to Biwabik, 54 miles (87km)
Thursday: Biwabik to Two Harbors, 70 miles (113km)
Friday: Two Harbors to Duluth, 26 miles (42km)

After 60 some hours in the truck, driving some 2,700 miles we finally made it! We got here! Our drive across the country was amazing. Some of the highlights included our helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon (thank you to Esther's parents for the awesome gift), our little hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, celebrating 4th of July at Mount Rushmore, as well as visiting Bjorn's sister and her husband in Sioux Falls. We arrived Sunday afternoon, where we were greeted by Bjorn's family, who helped us unload the truck. We're in the middle of unpacking the boxes ... but it feels wonderful to have arrived in our new home. Below are our pictures. Enjoy.

Road Trip to Our New Home!

Nach ca. 60 Stunden im LKW und 4.300 km Fahrt sind wir am Sonntag endlich gut hier gelandet. Unsere Fahrt quer durch die USA war klasse. Einige Highlights: Der Hubschrauberflug über dem Grand Canyon (danke an Esther's Eltern für das tolle Geschenk), eine kleine Wanderung im Rocky Mountain National Park, der Besuch von Mount Rushmore am 4. Juli, dem amerk. Unabhänigkeitstag, sowie unser Besuch bei Bjorn's Schwester und ihrem Mann. Am Sonntag Nachmittag wurden wir hier von Bjorn 's Familie begrüsst, die uns dann geholfen hat, den LKW auszuladen. Nun sind wir dabei, die vielen Kisten wieder auszupacken. Moving Day!! -- Umzugstag!!

After what feels like a month of packing and cleaning, we are finally ready to go. Tomorrow at 7 am, Bjorn will pick up the moving truck and after we've loaded it, we'll be on our way!! We expect to get to Minnesota next week Sunday - yep, after a full week of driving across the country! Below, I have written out our route day by day ... so you can check back each day and see where we're at :)

Nach tagelangem packen und Wohnung saubermachen, ist es endlich so weit. Morgen früh um 7 holt Bjorn den Umzugslaster ab, und nachdem wir ihn geladen haben, geht es los. We're moving - Wir ziehen um

Our lovely one bed-room apartment has officially been reduced to taken-apart pieces of furniture and stacks of boxes. I guess we are really moving! We're planning on leaving CA on Monday just after noon - and have tons to do until then. We'll post our route some time this weekend ... along with the results European soccer cup final. Go Germany!!

Unsere schöne Wohnung hat sich mittlerweile in eine Baustelle aus zusammengelegten Möbelteilen und hochgestapelten Kartons entwickelt. Wir ziehen also tatsächlich um! Am Montag Nachmittag geht es offiziell los, und bis dahin gibt es noch jede Menge zu tun. Wir werden unsere Fahrtroute am Sonntag auf den Blog stellen ... an dem Tag, den dem Deutschland hoffentlich Europameister wird!!

Farewells - Abschiede

On Sunday, we had two goodbye parties. First, Bjorn preached his last sermon at the church he's been interning at for the last 2 years. The church gave a really warm farewell, with tons of presents and a huge brunch :)

Am Sonntag waren wir auf zwei Abschiedsparties. Vormittags hat Bjorn in der Gemeinde, in der er die letzten 2 Jahre ein Praktikum gemacht hat, das letzte Mal gepredigt. Die Gemeinde hat uns sehr herzlich mit einem grossen Brunch verabschiedet.

Then in the afternoon, we went to a BBQ with Esther's cohort from school. She's been through her Master's classes with themfor the last two years and will dearly miss them.

Nachmittags waren wir dann auf einer Grillparty mit Esther's Komolitonen. Sie hat die letzten 2 Jahre Vorlesungen mit ihnen besucht und wird sie sehr vermissen.

Euro Cup / EM 2008!!

Even in the distant USA we found enough soccer fans (and a channel that broadcasts the games) to have a little crowd for the first Germany game of the European Soccer Cup. Germany beat Poland 2-0 ... and we can't wait for Thursday's game!!

Selbst im entfernten Amerika haben wir genug Fussball-Freunde gefunden (und einen Fernsehsender, der die Spiele überträgt), um das erste Deutschland-Spiel der EM gebührend zu feiern. Deutschland besiegte Polen 2:0 ... und wir warten schon gespannt auf das nächste Spiel am Donnerstag!!

Family Vacation - Urlaub mit der Familie

We just returned from a fun week of vacation at this great resort in Carlsbad, CA. I am very happy to report that we managed to vacation with my parents, Bjorn's parents, grandparents, and his sister and brother-in-law - and had a fabulous time. Some highlights were our visit to the Wild Animal Park, hanging out at the beach and the hotel's pool ... and eating tons of good food. Check out our pictures below.

Milestone - Meilenstein

Talk about a milestone: Today I had my last day at my job of almost 3 years. They threw me a goodbye party, where we received about $50 in Starbucks gift cards and $200 in gas giftcards for our road trip! Awesome!

Welch ein Meilenstein: Heute hatte ich meinen letzten Arbeitstag bei FEBC, wo ich fast 3 Jahre lang war. Meine Kollegen warfen mir eine Abschiedsparty, bei der wir unter anderem $50 in Starbucks-Gutscheinen und $200 in Tankkarten erhalten haben - für unseren Umzug diesen Sommer.

Then, this evening, we had Bjorn's hooding ceremony, called the Baccalaureate. My parents attended with us and it was a lot of fun. Tomorrow is graduation and on Saturday, we leave for vacation with both of our families.

Heute Abend hatte Bjorn dann seine "Hooding"-Zeremonie, auch genannt Baccalaureate. Meine Eltern waren dabei, und es war total klasse. Morgen ist dann Bjorn's Absolvierung und am Samstag geht es gemeinsam mit unseren Eltern in den Urlaub.

How we met ... - Wie wir uns kennengelernt haben

For those of you who voted in our little poll: Bjorn and I did really meet at the college coffee shop. I was there studying when he walked in with girl I knew, too. She introduced us, because she knew I was German and Bjorn was looking for a German tutor. I began giving him lessons ... mostly at that same coffee shop, and he would pay me with coffee.

Fuer die jenigen von euch, die an unserer kleinen Meinungsumfrage teilgenommen haben: Bjorn und ich haben und tatsaechlich zum ersten Mal im Uni-Cafe getroffen. Ich war da und habe Hausaufgaben gemacht und Bjorn kam rein mit einer anderen Studentin, die ich auch kannte. Sie stelle uns einander vor, da sie wusste, dass ich Deutsche bin, und Bjorn nach einem Deutschlehrer gesucht hat. Ich habe ihm dann Unterricht gegeben, meistens in dem gleichen Cafe, und er hat mit Kaffee dafuer bezahlt :)

First Graduation Gift - Erstes Geschenk zur Absolvierung

Esther and I decided to celebrate my graduation a little early - before things get too hectic and all with the festivities, etc. (Weak justification, but you know...gotta try.) So last weekend we went to get my gift from her. She blindfolded me (see photo) and we ended up at a local bike shop. (By the way, this is probably a good point to mention the big bike trip we're doing this summer. We'll be participating in The Ride Across Minnesota (TRAM) that benefits MS research and treatment - a five day, 250 mile trip, this year across the Iron Range and down the North Shore in northern MN.) Anyway, my gift was a pair of bike cleats. I've never biked with cleats before. I'm a little nervous! But my wife insists that they're worth it. She's been spinning with cleats for years...

Esther und ich haben beschlossen, meine Absolvierung ein bisschen früher zu feiern - bevor es mit den Feierlichkeiten zu stressig wird. (Das ist eine Ausrede - ich geb's zu.) Also, letztes Wochenende sind wir Shoppen gegangen, um Esthers Geschenk für mich zu kaufen. Sie hat mich gekidnappt (siehe Foto) und fuhr uns dann zu einem Fahrradgeschäft. (Übrigens, wir machen diesen Sommer ein grosses Fahrrad-Abenteuer. Es heißt "The Ride Across Minnesota" (TRAM) und ist zugunsten von MS-Forschung und Behandlungen. Die Tour geht 5 Tage, über 400 km, durch den Norden von Minnesota. Der letzte Tag geht an den großen Seen (Lake Superior) entlang.) Auf jeden Fall, mein Geschenk von Esther waren Fahrrad-Schuhe. Ich bin noch nie mit Fahrrad-Schuhen gefahren und bin ein bisschen nervös. Esther sagt mir aber, dass es sich lohnt und voll Spaß macht. Sie fährt schon seit Jahren damit...

First Graduation Dinner - Erste Absolvierungsfeier

Yesterday, we had the first of several graduation dinners. Talbot (Bjorn's seminary) every year puts on a very nice dinner at a fancy local restaurant called the Summit House - and graduating seniors get to go for free :)! We had a lovely time catching up with friends who've gone through the program with Bjorn and enjoying a delicious salmon dinner. This officially marks the beginning of Bjorn's graduation activities ... and it is hard to believe that its finally here!!

Gestern war die erste von vielen Feierlichkeiten zu Ehren von Bjorn's Absolvierung. Talbot (Bjorn's Uni) veranstaltet jedes Jahr ein Abendessen in einem edlen Restaurant hier in der Gegend - und Absolventen brauchen nichts dafür zu bezahlen! Es war klasse, einige unserer Freunde zu sehen, mit denen Bjorn studiert hat und das Abendessen (Lachs!) war super. Dies ist der offizielle Beginn von Bjorn's Absolvierungs-Festivitäten und es ist kaum zu glauben, dass er sein Studium nun fast geschafft hat.

Just in time to vindicate me, we had a day this week where the forecast for St. Paul, Minnesota was actually a few degrees warmer than the forecast for La Mirada! I couldn't let this opportunity pass without making sure all my co-workers knew (see below) :)

Harassment ... Mobbing am Arbeitsplatz

Ever since I told my colleagues that we're moving to Minnesota, I've been thoroughly ridiculed and harassed! Yesterday, I found the following weather forecast for St. Paul taped to my office door with the handwritten note: "Good News! It won't hit freezing this week!" For Californians, it's just absolutely incomprehensible that someone would CHOOSE to move to Minnesota.

Seit meine Kollegen wissen, dass wir nach Minnesota umziehen, werde ich deswegen gnadenlos gehaenselt! Gestern fand ich die folgende Wettervorhersage fuer St. Paul, MN an meiner Buerotuere, mit den folgenden Worten: "Gute Nachricht! Es wird diese Woche zumindest keine Minusgrade mehr geben!" Fuer Kalifornier ist es einfach absolut unvorstellbar, dass jemand freiwillig nach Minnesota umzieht ...

Today was a sad day for me (Esther) as I had to tell my friends and bosses at work that I'll be leaving my job at the end of May. I've been dreading having to tell them from the day I found out we were moving ... and I'm glad it's over! We're moving back to Minnesota this summer where Bjorn will work as a pastor. We're excited about the this new phase in our lives ... but I can't say I'm exicted about the thought of Minnesotan winters! We've had temps in the 90s this weekend, while Minnesota got more snow!

Heute war ein trauriger Tag fuer mich (Esther), da ich meinen Kolleginnen und Chefs bei der Arbeit sagen musste, dass ich Ende Mai meinen Job verlasse. Ich hatte diesem Tag mit Grauen entgegen gesehen, seid wir wussten, dass wir umziehen ... und ich bin froh, dass er vorbei ist! Wir ziehen diesen Sommer nach Minnesota, wo Bjorn eine Stelle als Pastor annimmt. Wir freuen uns auf den Umzug und die neue Phase, die vor uns liegt ... aber ich kann nicht gerade sagen, dass ich mit auf den Winter in Minnesota freue! Wir hatten dieses Wochenende 30 Grad, und in Minnesota hat es noch geschneit!

Weekend Tradition - Wochenend-Tradition

Every Saturday morning, we get up, throw on some jeans and a sweatshirt and head to Panera for our Saturday breakfast date. We've been doing that for almost the entire time we've lived here ... and if we're ever gone for a weekend, we totally miss it! Bjorn's favorite is a blueberry bagel or a pumpkin muffin, and Esther's usual is a low-fat blueberry muffin or a Dutch apple bagel. Yummie!
Unfortunately, it's also become a tradition that as soon as we get home, Bjorn packs up his stuff and heads to church to work on his sermon for Sunday ... and is often gone until dinner :( He just recently promised Esther that will get better as soon as he doesn't have to do school and church stuff at the same time. Good thing graduation is only 40 days, 11 hours, and 53 minutes away!!!

Jeden Samstag geht's direkt nach dem Aufstehen zu unserem Lieblings-Cafe Panera zu unserem wöchentlichen Frühstücksdate. Wir machen das mittlerweile schon bestimmt 2 Jahre ... und wenn wir mal ein Wochenende nicht Zuhause sind, vermissen wir es total. Bjorn bestellt sich normalerweile einen Blueberry Bagel oder einen Kürbismuffin, während Esther auf den Dutch Apple Bagel oder den Blueberry Muffin steht.
Leider ist es mittlerweile auch Tradition geworden, dass Bjorn, sobald wir wieder zuhause sind, seine Sachen zusammen packt und zur Gemeinde fährt, um dort an seiner Predigt für Sonntag zu schreiben. Meistens kommt er dann erst zum Abendessen wieder heim :( Allerdings hat er Esther vor Kurzen versprochen, dass sich das ändert, sobald er nicht mehr Studium und Gemeindearbeit neben einander her machen muss. Wie gut, dass seine Absolvierungsfeier nur noch 40 Tage, 11 Stunden und 53 Minuten entfernt ist!!

This is Bjorn writing his first blog again since we started blogging! I owe my wife a lot of thanks for keeping this thing up and running. She kindly suggested this evening that I post an entry again, so here it is... The big news right now is 49 days until my graduation! On May 23rd I'll have it in hand - my Master of Divinity from Talbot School of Theology (at Biola University). We look forward to celebrating with the family who will be joining us for the event: my parents and grandparents, my sister Ingrid and her husband Tony, and my in-laws Wilhelm and Ingrid Vorherr all the way from Germany!

Hier schreibt Bjorn zum ersten mal wieder seitdem wir unseren Blog angefangen haben! Ich habe meiner Frau zu danken, dass sie den Blog am Leben gehalten hat. Heute abend hat sie mich freundlich daran erinnert, dass ich auch mal wieder was schreiben könnte. Also: die große Nachricht zur Zeit ist, dass meine Absolvierung nur noch 49 Tage entfernt ist. Am 23. Mai ist es so weit - dann bekomme ich den Abschluss Master of Divinity von Talbot School of Theology (Schule der Theologie) bei Biola University. Wir freuen uns auf den großen Familienbesuch zu diesem Anlass: meine Eltern und Großeltern, meine Schwester Ingrid und ihr Mann Tony, und meine Schwiegereltern Wilhelm und Ingrid Vorherr aus dem weit entfernten Deutschland!

Since this will most likely be our last winter and spring in Sunny California, we take every chance we get to go out and enjoy the beaches and the sun. Since we both had a bit time off over Easter (Esther a day, Bjorn a week :)), we drove up to one of the great LA beaches: Hermosa Beach. The weather was summery warm but it wasn't too crowed yet ... just the perfect way to spend the Easter weekend. Happy Easter to all of you ... especially those spending it in the chilly Midwest!

Da dies wohl unser letzter Winter und Frühling im sonnigen Kalifornien sein wird, nutzen wir jede Gelegenheit, um die Sonne und das Meer zu geniessen! Und da wir beide ein paar freie Tage über Ostern hatten (Esther einen Tag, Bjorn eine Woche :)), sind wir gestern an einen der tollen Strände von Los Angeles gefahren: Hermosa Beach. Das Wetter war sommerlich warm, aber der Strand war noch nicht so überfüllt. Es war also ein klasse Ostersamstag. Von hier aus liebe Ostergrüsse an alle, die Ostern im winterlichen Deutschland verbringen !

Our Mini-Cruise to Mexico .... Unsere Mini-Kreuzfahrt nach Mexico

One of the things we've always wanted to do while living in LA was to go on one of the 4-day cruises down to Ensenada, Mexico ... and Esther's 29th birthday this weekend provided us with the excuse we've been looking for. It was the PERFECT little getaway ... gorgeous weather, excellent (and free!) food, tons of fun cruise activities ... and a day spent in Ensenada, Mexico. Esther's highlights included the off-road mountain bike excursion in Ensenada, and her birthday treat at the onboard spa. Bjorn's highlights included the whales we saw, along with watching the sun rise from the hot tub at 7am! We ate way too much delicious food, saw tons of great shows, and just all around enjoyed ourselves. Click here to see our pictures.

Cruise

Eins der Dinge, die wir schon immer einmal machen wollten, ist eine Mini-Kreuzfahrt, die hier von Los Angeles nach Ensenada, Mexico geht ... und Esther's 29. Geburtstag dieses Wochenende war die perfekte Gelegenheit, dies endlich zu tun. Was für ein toller Kurzurlaub ... super Wetter, klasse (und all-inclusive) Essen, jede Menge tolle Unternehmungen auf dem Schiff ... und ein toller Tag, den wir in Ensenada, Mexico verbrachten. Esther's Highlights waren die Off-road Mountain-Bike Tour in Ensenada, und die Massage, die sie als Geburtstagsgeschenk im schiffseigenen Wellness-Center bekam. Bjorn's Highlights waren die Waale, die wir vom Schiff aus beobachteten, und den Sonnenaufgang, dem wir vom Whirlpool aus zu sahen. A perfect Friday afternoon

We love Friday afternoons! Esther's usually gets off work at noon ... and it's early enough in the weekend for Bjorn, who often spend most of his Friday evenings and Saturdays preparing for sermons or other church functions.
Today, we spent some time in uptown Whittier where Esther got her hair cut at this little salon called "Mozart" (results below). Afterwards, we stopped at a famous little bakery called "Polly's Pies" for some apple pie and coffee. You don't find very many mom-and-pop kind of places like this one in Southern California anymore ... but if you're ever in the area, we highly recommend their pies!

Wir lieben Freitag-Nachmittage :) Esther ist normalerweise um die Mittagszeit zuhause, und auch Bjorn hat Gelegenheit, sein Wochenende zu geniessen ... bevor er Freitagabend und Samstags oft am Predigt-schreiben oder Gottesdienst-vorbereiten sitzt. Heute verbrachten wir den Nachmittag in Uptown Whittier, einer netten Stadt im 70ger Jahre Flair. Esther hat sich in einem kleinen Salon names "Mozart" die Haare schneiden lassen (Ergebnis unten), während Bjorn sich bei Starbucks die Zeit vertrieb. Anschliessend ging wir bei Polly's Pie Apfelpie essen. Das ist so ein gemütlicher Familienbetrieb im American Dinner-Stil, von denen es in Südkalifornien nicht mehr viel gibt. Aber den Appel Pie können wir nur empfehlen!

Recently, Esther's brother Johannes and his wife Annedore had a 5-day layover in LA on their way to New Zealand. We thoroughly enjoyed having our second guests from Germany this year! We had our neighbors Markus and Nicole over for a German game night ... and of course, we showed them some of the best spots in Southern California, like Salt Creek Park, one of our favorite beaches in OC.
Vor kurzem hatten Esther's Bruder Johannes und seine Frau Annebore einen 5-tägigen Zwischenstopp in LA auf ihrem Weg nach Neuseeland. Wir luden unsere Nachbarn Markus und Nicole zu einem deutschen Spieleabend ein ... und natürlich zeigten wir Johannes und Annedore auch die schönen Seiten Südkalifornien, wie z.B. Salt Creek Park, einen wunderschönen Strand südlich von hier.

Happy Valentine's Day! We celebrated the occassion with Esther's brother Joe and his wife Anne, who stopped in LA for a few days before heading on to New Zealand. We took them to one of our favorite places, the Fitness Grill. And after delicious whole-wheat pizza and grilled Ahi, we just couldn't help ourselves and ordered the Molten Chocolate cake ... whith fat-free ice cream, of course :)

Celebrity-Sighting .... Wir und die Stars

Living in Southern California, people frequently ask us if we see lots of celebrities. We don't ... until recently, that is. A couple of weeks ago, Esther was waiting at the airport to pick up her sister and brother-in-law. And as she's watching the gate's exit, she notices a familiar face - only it's not that of sister or brother-in-law but of gold-metal snow- and skateboarder Shaun White. He literally walked within feet of her, and as he passed, the lady next to her turned and said "Wasn't that that famous guy?" It was indeed. Esther's sister later told us that she was standing right next to him at the baggage claim, which makes us think he was probably on the same flight (maybe returning from a snowboarding trip in the Alps?). Lesson learned: You never know who you might bump into :)

Da wir in Südkalifornien leben, fragen uns Leute immer mal wieder, ob wir viele Stars sehen. Tun wir eigentlich nicht ... bis auf neulich. Da war Esther am Flughafen und hat auf ihre Schwester und ihren Schwager gewartet. Und während sie so auf den Ausgang des Gates starrt, kommt ihr ein Gesicht auf einmal bekannt vor. Es war aber nicht das ihrer Schwester oder deren Mann ... sondern das von Goldmedallien-Gewinner im Snow- und Skateboarden, Shaun White. Dieser lief nur weninge Meter an ihr vorbei, und die Frau neben ihr drehte sich um und sagte, "Das war doch dieser berühmte Typ!". War er auch. Später erzählte Rebecca, dass sie an der Gepäckausgabe direkt neben ihm stand. Er sass bestimmt im gleichen Flieger (vielleicht war er zum Snowboarden in den Alpen?). Mann weiss also nie, wem man so alles begegnen kann :)

We've spent another fabulous week with Esther's sister and her husband. Having them around gave us an excuse to take them to our favorite restaurants and explore our favorite spots in Southern California. The pictures below were taking on our trip to Dana Point and Laguna Beach yesterday. Tomorrow, Rebecca and Thomas are off to San Fransisco.

Wir haben eine weitere tolle Woche mit Esther's Schwester Rebecca und ihrem Mann Thomas verbracht. Sie hier zu haben war ein guter Anlass für uns, unsere Lieblings-Restaurants zu besuchen und ihnen unsere Lieblingsplätze in Südkalifornien zu zeigen. Die Bilder unten haben wir gestern an zwei solchen Orten gemacht: Dana Point und Laguna Beach. Morgen fahren die beiden dann nach San Fransisco.

Family and Friends ....

Lately, we've had lots of visitors from home. Last week, Bjorn's dad flew in together with friends of the family who were looking at Biola. Bjorn got to spend lots of time with them showing them around Southern California, while Esther was working and in class.

In letzter Zeit hatten wir einige Besucher aus unserer Heimat. Letzte Woche war Bjorn's Vater zu Besuch, der Freunde der Familie begleitet hat, die sich Biola angeschaut haben. Bjorn hat viel Zeit mit ihnen verbracht und ihnen Südkalifornien gezeit, während Esther gearbeitet hat und am Samstag in der Vorlesung war.

Then on Saturday, Esther's siter Rebecca and her husband Thomas arrived for a belated honeymoon! They'll be here for two weeks and we're having lots of fun together.

Am Samstag dann kamen Esther's Schwester Rebecca und ihr Mann Thomas an, die in Kalifornien ihre Hochzeitsreise nachholen. Sie werden zwei Wochen hier sein und wir geniessen es sehr!

As our American friends know, this is a very special time of year: NFL Playoffs. For dedicated fans like Bjorn it means spending exciting hours in front of the television watching the victory or demise of his favorite teams, best served with chips and salsa. For the rest of the world, Esther included, it means planning life around football broadcasts, knowing well enough that she won't be able to get Bjorn away from the TV while a game is on :) Well then: Go Packers!

Wie unsere amerikanischen Freunde wissen, ist dies gerade eine ganz besondere Zeit des Jahres: Football-Championship (hier genannt: NFL Playoffs). Für wahre Fans wie Bjorn bedeutet das spannende Stunden vor dem Fernseher zu verbringen, am besten mit Chips und Salsa, um die Höhen und Tiefen seiner Lieblingsmannschaften zu verfolgen. Für den Rest der Welt, Esther mit eingeschlossen, bedeutet es, das Leben um Football-Übertragungen zu planen, denn sie weiss ganz genau, dass sie Bjorn nicht vom Fernseher weg bringt, so lange ein Spiel läuft. Na dann: Viel Glück, Packers!

We hope all of you had a pleasant start into the new year. We began 2008 trying to catch a few hours of sleep before our early morning departure for the airport on January 1st. Now, we've safely landed back into our routine ... and as much as we miss Germany and Esther's family, there hasn't been much time for reminiscing. Esther started work the day after our return, and even had evening and a Saturday class to sit through (and to stay awake for, despite jet lag). Bjorn's been equally busy with his two interterm classes, church responsibilities, and an extra portion of house work, which he kindly took on while Esther was in class.

Wir hoffen, ihr alle hattet einen angenehmen Start ins Neue Jahr. Wir begannen 2008 schlafend, um vor unserer frühmorgendlichen Abfahrt zum Flughafen noch etwas Schlaf zu bekommen. Mittlerweile sind wir wieder sicher im Alltag angekommen .... und auch wenn wir Deutschland und Esthers Familie sehr vermissen, bleibt doch nicht viel Zeit zum Trauern. Esther musste am Tag nach unserer Ankunft schon wieder ins Büro, und hatte abends und am Samstag sogar noch Vorlesung (für die sie versuchen musste wach zu bleiben, trotz des Jetlags!). Auch Bjorn ist sehr beschäftigt, mit seinen beiden Vorlesungen, Aufgaben in der Gemeinde, und einer extra Portion Hausarbeit, die er netterweise für Esther übernommen hat, während sie in der Vorlesung ist.

Christmas in Germany - Weihnachten in Deutschland

We're on the last leg of our family vacation in Germany. It was a full and special time ... and we'll leave here with our hearts filled with wonderful family memories! We managed to see just about everybody in Esther's family, got to spend time with her 2 brothers and her sister along with their spouses, her parents, grandmothers, aunt and uncles, cousins, neighbors and a few friends! We were shopping and cooking and baking for the holidays - but also spent a lot of time outdoors walking and running, despite the cold (and some snow!). We were joking that most of our pictures show us either eating or walking ... and that's probably how we spent the majority of the time.

Weihnachten in Deutschland

Nun neigt sich unsere Deutschlandreise schon wieder ihrem Ende entgegen. Es war eine volle, schöne Zeit ... und wir werden viele schöne Erinnerungen mit nach Kalifornien nehmen. Wir schafften es, fast alle in Esthers Familie zu sehen und verbrachten Zeit mit ihren Brüdern und ihrer Schwester mit deren Ehepartners, ihren Eltern, Omas, Tanten, Onkels, Cousinen, Nachbarn und Freunden! Wir waren shoppen und haben für die Festtage gebacken und gekocht, aber waren auch viel draussen, zum spazieren oder joggen - trotz der Kälte (und manchem Schnee). Wir scherzten, dass unsere Fotos uns entweder beim Essen oder draussen beim Laufen zeigen ... und damit haben wir wohl den Grossteil unserer Zeit verbracht!

Christmas Parties ....

Our last few days before our departure to Germany have been filled with various Christmas parties. Last Friday, our friends Mindy and Rudy hosted a fun party at their house.

Die letzten Tage vor unserer Abreise nach Deutschland waren mit verschiedenen Weihnachtsfeiern gefüllt. Am Freitag waren wir bei Mindy und Rudy zu einer Weihnachtsparty mit Freunden.

Then today, Esther's work had their annual Christmas luncheon. Bjorn had the difficult task of finding an appropriate outfit for the occassion ... and when Esther came home, this is what the bedroom looked like ....

Heute dann war bei Esther's Arbeit FEBC's alljährliche Weihnachstfeier. Bjorn hatte die schwierige Aufgabe, für diese Veranstaltung das richtige Outfit zu finden. Als Esther nach Hause kam, sah es im Schlafzimmer so aus ...

Season's Greetings - Weihnachtsgrüsse

We had a day of rain this week, which is for Californians what snow is to the rest of the country. We took this as our clue to start decorating for Christmas. We decided to get a little live tree (that we could plant in our back yard, if we had one).

Diese Woche hat es einen Tag geregnet, was für Kalifornier wohl das gleiche ist, wie wenn es in anderen Teilen der Welt schneit. Wir haben das zum Anlass genommen, um unsere Wohnung etwas weihnachtlich zu schmücken. Dieses Jahr haben wir uns einen kleinen Baum im Topf gekauft, den wir nach Weihnachten in unseren Garten pflanzen könnten, wenn wir einen Garten hätten.

Esther even got around to baking her first batch of Christmas cookies - which Bjorn had to test for quality, of course, right as they came out of the oven.

Esther hat sogar schon die erste Runde Weihnachtsplätzchen gebacken - die Bjorn sofort auf ihre Qualität überprüfen musste.

Thanksgiving

What a great Thanksgiving we had! We celebrated the day with our German friends Markus and Nicole, and another couple from Talbot, Kevin and his wife Ginny. Everybody pitched in and brought a few dishes, which made cooking fun and easy. We shared a delicious meal (Bjorn's best turkey yet!), went for a walk, enjoyed dessert, games, and ended the day with a movie. Next to spending the day with family, this was sure the next best thing. To see more photos, click on the picture below.

Gestern war Thanksgiving - einer der wichtigsten amerikanischen Feiertage! Wir verbrachten den Tag mit unseren Freunden Markus, Nicole, Kevin und Ginny. Jeder brachte ein paar Gerichte, so dass das Kochen einfach und schnell ging. Das Essen war klasse (Bjorn's leckerer Truthahn wird jedes Jahr besser!). Danach ging es raus zu einem Spaziergang. Später gab es Pie zum Nachtisch, wir machten ein paar Spiele und endeten den Tag mit einem Film. Auch wenn wir den Tag nicht mit Familie verbringen konnten, war das doch ein klasse Ersatz! November Weekend - November Wochenende

While Germany is having their first snow (and Minnesota, too), we reminded ourselves of the benefits of living in Southern California ... by spending a lazy afternoon at the beach ... in November. The weather is perfect now for Bjorn, not too hot, and still warm enough for Esther, who happens to like the heat.

Während es in Deutschland den ersten Schnee gibt (und auch in Minnesota), genossen wir die Vorzüge des kalifornischen Lebens und verbrachten einen gemütlichen Nachmittag am Strand ... im November! Das Wetter war perfekt, nicht zu heiss für Bjorn, aber noch warm genug für Esther, die die Hitze gewöhnlich mag.

Friday night, we had the neighbors over for our usual movie-night, complete with popcorn and other treats :) Nicole lost her sweet tooth since becoming pregnant, which leaves all the more for the rest of us.

Am Freitag hatten wir unsere Nachbarn zum wöchentlichen Filme-Abend zu Besuch. Es gab Popcorn und andere Leckereien. Nicole steht während der Schwangerschaft nicht so auf Süsses, und damit bleibt mehr für uns :)

Bjorn's sister Ingrid and her husband Tony recently added little Dakota to their family (a yellow lab).

Bjorns Schwester Ingrid und ihr Mann Tony haben vor kurzem Zuwachs bekommen...ihren Hund Dakota - einen Labrador.

Also, our neighbors, Markus and Nicole (from Germany), recently found out that they're expecting. A baby, not a dog. You can see in the picture that we took the news in stride.

Unsere Nachbarn, Markus und Nicole (aus Deutschland), bekommen auch Zuwachs...ihr erstes Baby, keinen Hund. Wie ihr auf dem Bild unten sehen könnt, hat uns die Nachricht nicht in geringsten überrascht.

You've probably been seeing in the news that California is suffering from terrible wildfires. We're safe where we are (in La Mirada). The closest fire is about 20 miles away in Irvine. And Malibu is about 40 miles away. Nevertheless, we see (and smell) the smoke in the sky and ash dusts the cars and streets. The picture below was taken from the second story of our building, looking toward Malibu.

Wie ihr vielleicht in den Nachrichten gesehen habt, ist Kalifornien von schlimmen Wald- und Buschbränden betroffen. Auch wenn wir nicht direkt in einer der Gegenden wohnen, konnte man heute doch den ganzen Tag den Rauch riechen, und z.T. die Asche in der Luft sehen. Wir sind von Bränden umzingelt, im Süden sind die Brände ca. 35km entfernt, im Norden, Nordwesten und Nordosten ca. 60km. Viel näher wird das Feuer aber nicht kommen, denn wo wir wohnen gibt es kilometerlang nur Beton und Asphalt :)

Direkt vor unserem Haus konnte man den ganzen Tag die Rauchfahnen am Himmel sehen.

7:20 a.m. Esther's off to another day at the office. It's a 7 minute commute. You'd never believe we live in LA! Bjorn, taking this picture, is still in his pajamas. Just another day in the life of a graduate student and his sugar momma.

7.20 Uhr. Esther ist auf dem Weg ins Büro. Die Fahrt dauert eine ganze 7 Minuten. Und das im Verkehrs-chaos von Los Angeles - ein Wunder! Bjorn, der das Foto macht, hat noch seinen Pajama an. Das Leben ist hart...

This is where you'll find her from 7:30 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., either at her desk or running around in the building. She leads a small department (Donor Services) and manages another (Development)... and she spends a good portion of her day on the phone with the consultants in Dallas.

Von 7:30 Uhr bis 16.15 kann man sie dann an ihrem Schreibtisch oder irgendwo sonst im Gebäude finden. Sie leitet eine kleine Abteilung (Spendenbetreung) und managt eine zweite (Fundraising) ... und verbringt dabei viel Zeit am Telefon!

This week I (Esther) was in Texas on a business trip - so Bjorn had to fend for himself. As you can see, he managed in his usual sort of way!

Diese Woche habe ich (Esther) beruflich in Texas verbracht - deshalb musste Bjorn öfters als sonst zum amerikanischen Standard-Essen greifen: Burger :)

Our Apartment - Unsere Wohnung

It's Saturday afternoon and Bjorn is working on his sermon for tomorrow.

Our living room is small and cozy, as is the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom...okay, the whole apartment! And this little piece of LA real estate only costs us $785 a month...a real steal! :) For that price, we could have a whole house and working farm in Esther's village in Germany!

Es ist Samstag nachmittag und Bjorn schreibt an der Predigt für den Gottesdienst.

Unser Wohnzimmer ist klein aber fein, sowie auch die Küche, das Schlafzimmer, das Bad ... eigentlich die ganze Wohnung! Und dafür zahlen wir schlappe $785 ... ein Schnäppchen also! Dafür könnten wir in Freudenbach ein ganzes Haus mieten, und einen Stall und eine Scheune noch dazu!

Here are a few pictures of our humble little home here in La Mirada, a suburb of LA. 14345 Rosecrans Ave ... our address. It's an old building, from the 60's, that now belongs to Biola. This building and the one next to it are available to Biola's graduate married students.
